Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial arts form that primarily deals with ground combat and grappling. It focuses on the use of leverage, joint locks, and technical chokes (many while on the ground) to help is practitioners achieve the upper hand in a dangerous situation. This art receives much of it’s popularity thanks to its showing of effectiveness in the famous fighting league UFC in the 90’s by the Gracie Family. BJJ is a great self-defense art due to it being designed for a smaller individual (be they male or female) to be able to combat a larger, stronger opponent. On the ground, anyone can win.

Learning ground techniques is an important element of self-defense training, as many real life confrontations mostly end on the ground. While learning BJJ you will be able to gain knowledge of how to control a situation on the ground, control your attacker, and subdue them. Along with self-defense you will also develop strong core muscles and a strong core of friends along the way. Many BJJ students will tell you “it’s not just a class, it’s a way of life”.
